The Laguna’s foremost feature is its central location. That also happens to be its worst feature—if you value quiet, because the street noise can be excessive at times. But want to check your email? There’s a computer with Internet access in the lobby for guest use free of charge (if it’s occupied, there’s an Internet café a two-minute walk away).

Indeed, a grocery store, numerous restaurants and bars, boatmen, tour services, real estate and legal offices and other services are all within a stone’s throw if you’ve got any kind of arm. Its proximity to so many businesses is a major plus in a town that receives lots of rain.

Taxis are easy to hail out front, far less so on Avenidas H and I (a.k.a. Avenida Norte), which can leave you drenched on rainy days if ill-prepared, and the walk from those avenues where many hotels are situated to the center of Bocas, though not a particularly long one, can get tiresome.

Guestroom sizes vary considerably; ask to see several if you’re unhappy with the size of the one you’re led to. Handsome varnished woods line the floors and walls of the guestrooms, and a colorful bedspread and firm mattress are welcome additions to the rooms.

A few of the bathrooms are on the small side, but there’s hot and cold agua in the shower and sink. Every room is equipped with a TV (mostly local stations). Rooms facing Calle 3 get the most street noise, followed by those fronting Avenida D. Ask to see one of the rooms leading off the lobby and to the rear of the building if you’re concerned about street noise.

The hotel has a water-purification system, but you’d be wise to use bottled water, which is readily available in Panama (nothing spoils a spot of snorkeling faster than diarrhea). If you want plenty of space and/or would like a fridge in your room, upgrade to the “deluxe suite,” a larger room with a breakfast table, chairs and a fridge. Rates vary with demand, but usually run $50 to $70; always request the special rate—one is usually available.
